The tribal community struggled to operate a group of companies. Fractured operations along with a lack of long-term strategies, planning, communication, or teamwork and heavy reliance on costly external consultants impeded success. No incentive for educational success or advanced education existed. A dearth of support, mentoring, or financial aid to guide people seeking housing, covering college costs, and returning to the community hampered transformation.
Collaborated with the chief to establish an education scholarship program within tribe schools. The program mentored high schoolers into a specialized vocation and helped students set goals for good grades. Partnered with community facilitators to coach high school graduates through the college selection program. Instituted tribal-sponsored housing along with housekeeping and accountability agreements. Formalized a list of specialties the community needed for self-reliance including lawyers, doctors, teachers, mechanics, plumbers, carpenters, accountants, nurses, chiropractors, IT professionals, estheticians, hairstylists, and more. Mentored youth in transition with a focus on housing, life skills, tuition support, part-time jobs, campus student groups, tutoring, transportation, subsidies, scholarships, and returning to the tribe post-college to empower others.
The program dramatically enhanced morale and incentives for students while renewing hope for the tribe among the chief and council members. The tribe allocated $1 million for the program. The effort increased student enrollment from three to 35, reduced cost per graduate 80%, and decreased housing costs 90%. The school noted improvements in GPAs and success rates for students.
